Trust the Process of Life

Life is a journey and sometimes it goes wrong in our favour. It might not seem it at the time, especially when we are in the thick of it and struggling to see our way forward, but it is true.

"The struggle you are in today is developing the strength you need for tomorrow". Robert Tew

When challenging times arise we often focus on what we don't have, and that we are not at the destination we prepared in our minds. We resist the present experience through shying away from it, complaining about it, or battling it head on. We invest all of this energy into not moving forward and then we wonder why we feel stuck.

I am currently living through such an experience. I had an accident 3.5 months ago that left me with a concussion and neck injury, both of which I am expected to make a complete recovery from. It is fair to say that I have resisted the experience throughout my recovery, focussing on everything I can't do and how it doesn't align with the goals I set for the year. I thought I would be better in a week or two and I have resented the recovery process as it hasn't meet these, what I now realise, unrealistic expectations. While I have held onto my belief that everything happens for a reason, I have still struggled.

It is easy to focus on what you don't have, and to let your monkey mind and automatic thoughts define your reality. Feeling stuck, unhappy and hopelessly out of control are normal. The power, however, comes from what you choose to do next.

Recently I started a new daily morning routine. I get up early to ride my bike to the beach where I watch the sunrise. I love the fact that I am able to exercise, something I wasn’t able to do for many weeks. Also, I value the privilege to live so close to the water, to breathe clean air and have the sight to see such a beautiful phenomenon each morning. I doubt I would have had, or perhaps more so appreciated, this experience if it wasn't for my accident. I have also spent time reflecting and resetting my goals for the year taking into account my current situation.

We have more control over our circumstances than we give ourselves credit for. Our thoughts become things therefore to make a change we simply need to change our mindset and choose to turn each negative thought into a positive one.

When you experience a setback trust the process of life and accept that you are exactly where you are meant to be at this point in time. Also, remember "an arrow can only be shot by pulling it backward. So when life is dragging you back with difficulties, it means that it's going to launch you into something great. So just focus, and keep aiming".
